Jorge Merced wins El Diario/La Prensa's "EL" Award as one of the 25 Most Oustanding and Influential Latinos in New York! In a gala event held at the Grand Havana Club on 52nd Street, actor, director, and activist Jorge B. Merced was recognized with the prestigious "El" Award as one of 25 Outstanding Latinos by El Diario La Prensa, New York's leading Spanish language daily.
A graduate of the New York City College-CUNY Theatre Department, the International Theater School in Cuba (EITALC), and the Alvin Ailey School, Jorge is Associate Artistic Director of Pregones Theater. His numerous professional credits include the award-winning Asunción Playwrights Project, and more than 50 theatrical productions including El bolero fue mi ruina, El apagón/The Blackout, Baile Cangrejero, Blanco, El huésped vacío, and Brides. Creative collaborations in both dance and theater include premieres with Pablo Cabrera, Toño Martorell, Arthur Aviles, and Eduardo Alegría. Merit distinctions include multiple awards from the New York ACE Latino Critics and HOLA Organization of Latin Actors include Best Actor and Best Director recognitions, the Puerto Rican Institute of New York Distinguished Actor/Director Award, BRIO Bronx Artist Award, and the New York PRIDE Award for his advocacy on behalf of the Puerto Rican Transgender, Bisexual, Lesbian and Gay Community. He has trained, performed, and directed throughout the U.S. and abroad in Cuba, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Nicaragua, France, Peru, Chile, Holland, Slovakia, and Puerto Rico. |
At the award ceremony, Merced thanked his colleagues at Pregones Theater and dedicated the award to his father, for instilling in him a profound love for the arts, culture and being proud of his Puerto Rican roots: "Mi padre siempre me decía de niño que nunca coartara mi curiosidad, particualrmente por las artes, ya que la curiosidad y el arte son hermanas," shared Merced with the Spanish press present at the ceremony, "y ese juego de aprender nuevas cosas es lo que mas nos enriquece el alma, dándole paso a una vida plena llena de creatividad y pasión."
